Even more so than the type of therapy, research and experience show that the biggest catalyst to positive change is the therapeutic relationship. For most though, it’s not exactly easy, or pleasurable, to be vulnerable and trust a total stranger. To jump-start this process, it requires authenticity, good communication, acceptance, problem-solving, flexibility, self-awareness, and empathy on the part of the therapist to hold the space for this developing relationship. These same qualities of relationship building are transferred into the therapy, where an alliance of learning and understanding is deepened by the strength of the bond, ensuing healing and growth by you.
The most lasting form of learning comes from insight: that “Aha” moment that illuminates the hidden confines blocking the way forward or what is needed for resolution. It is not just intellectual understanding; it is a whole embodiment of the self—a synergy of mind and heart—that grasps the totality of the issue. Within the safe space of the therapeutic hour, a higher-level of meaning can be nurtured and cultivated, wherein meaning doesn’t just indicate letting go of the pain, but rather becomes about transforming what was once paralyzing into flight. This stage of therapy signifies an active commitment to hope and then the re-authoring of an experience now more fully realized.
Healing comes in reconnecting with oneself and one’s spheres of influence—this is known as catharsis. Ending a therapeutic journey though doesn’t mean having it all figured out, or that the need for therapy will not exist at a later point. Rather it means having enough determination to move into motion a different way of connecting with your life. It signifies that this episode of care has been resolved, due to the evidence of your ability to restart living a life more fully to your sense of what it means to be alive. As a therapist, the art of finishing therapy is just as impactful as its beginning—it is a time of reflection, learning to say goodbye, and a yearning for new beginnings.
